How We Do It
Hot rolled round bar, Ø 22–160 mm, in the grade you specify.
Bar Peeling
Peeled bar, typically h11, with a bright, defect-free surface.
- Check the bar. We confirm grade, starting diameter and straightness.
- Peel. The bar passes through the cutter head and loses a thin layer all round.
- Straighten and cut to length.
- Inspect diameter, surface and straightness, then certify the heat.
Why Use Bar Peeling?
The skin of a hot rolled bar is its weakest part. It carries scale, small seams and a layer that has lost carbon. Peeling removes it, so your heat treatment and final dimensions start from sound material.
When Should You Choose It?
Choose peeled bar for forging stock, heat treated parts and any component where decarburisation or surface seams would cause a failure. Choose drawn bar when you want strength and size control. Choose ground bar when you need a tolerance tighter than h11. Peeled bars can be ground or polished afterwards.
Common Questions
What is the bar peeling process?
The bar is pushed through a rotating cutter head that shaves a thin layer off its whole surface. The result is a clean, round bar at a controlled diameter.
What is a peeled bar?
A peeled bar is a hot rolled bar that has had its outer skin machined off. It has no scale, no decarburised layer and no surface seams, and it holds a tighter diameter than the rolled bar.
Why peel a bar before machining or forging?
The skin of a hot rolled bar can be decarburised and carry seams. Peeling removes that layer so the finished part is not soft or cracked at the surface.
What tolerance do peeled bars hold?
Peeled bars are typically h11. For a Ø 50 mm bar, that is 0 to −0.160 mm. If you need tighter, we grind the peeled bar to IT9–IT6.
What is the difference between peeled and cold drawn bar?
Peeling cuts metal away and leaves the bar properties unchanged. Cold drawing pulls the bar through a die and raises strength and hardness. Peeling reaches larger sizes, up to Ø 160 mm.
What sizes and grades can you peel?
OneKaizen peels round bar from Ø 22 to 160 mm in C45, 16MnCr5, 42CrMo4, EN24 and 100Cr6, among others.
Can you peel and grind or polish a bar?
Yes. Peeled bars can go on to centreless grinding for IT9–IT6, or be polished for a finer surface.
What do I send for a quote?
Send us the grade, starting and finished diameter, length and quantity. We come back with the route, inspection plan and delivery date.
