TECHNICAL GUIDE

What Is Bright Bar, and When Should You Use It?

A bright bar is steel bar finished after hot rolling, by cold drawing, peeling or grinding, to give a clean bright surface, a tight size tolerance and better straightness. It saves machining time and material at your next operation.

What Is Bright Bar Steel Used For?

Bright bar goes into shafts, pins, spindles, bolts, gears and other machined parts where the bar must run true and hold size. You buy it when you want to skip a roughing cut, or when the part needs a clean surface and a close tolerance. We supply bright bar from Ø 8 to 160 mm.

How Is Bright Bar Made?

OneKaizen starts with hot rolled bar and finishes it by one of three routes. Cold drawing pulls the bar through a die for size and added strength. Peeling machines off the outer skin. Grinding finishes the bar on a grinder for the tightest tolerance and best surface.

RouteToleranceBest for
Cold drawnh9–h11 (EN 10278)Size control and added strength
Peeledh11A clean surface without the outer skin
GroundIT9–IT6The tightest tolerance and best surface

Bright Bar vs Black Bar: What Is the Difference?

Black bar is hot rolled bar, left with its dark mill scale and a wider size tolerance. Bright bar is the same steel after a finishing route. It has no scale, a smooth surface and a closer tolerance. Choose black bar when you will machine heavily anyway. Choose bright bar when you want to machine less.

Bright Bar vs Mild Steel and EN8: Are They the Same Thing?

No. Bright is a finish, not a grade. Mild steel and EN8 are grades, and both can be supplied as bright bar. EN8 is a medium carbon steel that responds to heat treatment. Mild steel is a low carbon steel for general use. Tell us the grade and the finish separately.

Bright Bar vs Round Bar, and Bright Bar vs Ground Bar

A round bar can be hot rolled, forged or bright. A bright bar is always a finished bar. A ground bar is one kind of bright bar, finished on a grinder to IT9–IT6. Cold drawn and peeled bars sit between black bar and ground bar on tolerance and surface.

What Should You Specify When You Order Bright Bar?

Send us the grade or standard, diameter, length, tolerance class, surface requirement, quantity and application. Add a drawing when you have one. We will confirm the finish route, inspection plan and delivery date.
