SAE 9254 is a spring steel with 0.51–0.59% carbon, 1.20–1.60% silicon, 0.60–0.80% manganese and 0.60–0.80% chromium. The silicon gives high yield strength and resistance to set (sagging), and the chromium adds hardenability and some temper resistance. It is the classic valve spring steel, also used for suspension springs, clutch and brake springs, engine springs and torsion bars.
OneKaizen supplies SAE 9254 as bright wires in Ø 1.5–37 mm, wire rods in Ø 5.5–40 mm, round bars in Ø 16–500 mm and bright bars in Ø 8–160 mm, sourced from Indian and international mills. Delivery condition is your choice: hot rolled, annealed, or cold drawn and oil-tempered wire. Every consignment ships with a mill test certificate.

Delivery Condition and Heat Treatment
Springs from SAE 9254 are normally coiled and then quenched and tempered. Oil-tempered wire is supplied already hardened and tempered, so the spring maker only coils and stress relieves it. For hot-coiled springs from bar, the steel is austenitised, quenched in oil and tempered to the hardness your drawing requires.
Silicon steels are sensitive to surface decarburisation during hot rolling and heat treatment, and a decarburised surface cuts fatigue life sharply. State the permitted decarburisation depth in your order. Shot peening after coiling improves fatigue life further.
Welding is not recommended. The high carbon and silicon make the weld zone hard and brittle, and a welded spring loses its fatigue strength.

SAE 9254 Questions
Is SAE 9254 the same as 54SiCr6?
They are close but not identical. 54SiCr6 (1.7102) in EN 10089 is the nearest European equivalent and is widely supplied against SAE 9254 orders. The manganese, chromium, phosphorus and sulphur limits differ slightly. Tell us if your drawing needs the exact SAE chemistry.
Is SAE 9254 the same as SUP12?
JIS SUP12 is a close equivalent, with the same carbon and silicon bands. The two are interchanged for valve and suspension springs, but check your drawing for the manganese, chromium, phosphorus and sulphur limits.
What is the difference between SAE 9254 and SAE 9260?
SAE 9260 has more silicon (1.80–2.20%) and no chromium. It suits leaf and coil springs. SAE 9254 adds chromium, which gives better hardenability and temper resistance, so it is used for valve springs and springs that run hot.
Can SAE 9254 be heat treated or welded?
Yes, it is quenched and tempered to make springs. We do not recommend welding.
What is SAE 9254 used for?
Valve springs, suspension springs, clutch and brake springs, engine springs and torsion bars, mainly for automotive, railway, two-wheeler and agricultural equipment. OneKaizen also machines parts to drawing through partner machine shops.
What is the minimum order for SAE 9254?
3 tonnes, flexible depending on size and your situation. Send us your size, condition and quantity and we confirm availability and delivery.
What is SAE 9254 equivalent to?
SAE 9254 is the same grade as AISI/SAE 9254, UNS G92540, UNI 54SiCr6, UNE 54SiCr6. Close equivalents are JIS SUP12, EN 54SiCr6, DIN W.Nr. 1.7102.
In which forms do you supply SAE 9254?
OneKaizen supplies SAE 9254 as Bright Wires, Round Bars, Wire Rods, Bright Bars, delivered across India and exported to buyers abroad.
Do you supply SAE 9254 with a mill test certificate?
Yes. Every lot ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing chemistry and mechanical properties, traceable to the heat number.
