SAE 1144 is a free-cutting steel with 0.40–0.48% carbon, 1.35–1.65% manganese and 0.24–0.33% sulphur. The sulphur forms manganese sulphide inclusions that break the chip and ease tool wear, while the carbon and manganese give more strength than low-carbon free-cutting grades. It is widely bought in the cold drawn, stress relieved condition for shafts, hydraulic piston rods and cylinders, gears, bolts, studs, pins and couplings.
OneKaizen supplies SAE 1144 as bright round bars in Ø 8–160 mm, bright hex bars in 18–50 mm AF, rolled round bars in Ø 16–500 mm, square bars in 20–480 mm and shafts in Ø 25–500 mm, sourced from Indian and international mills. Delivery condition is your choice: hot rolled, cold drawn, cold drawn and stress relieved, or turned and polished. OneKaizen also machines parts to drawing through partner machine shops. Every consignment ships with a mill test certificate.

Delivery Condition and Heat Treatment
SAE 1144 is mostly used cold drawn and stress relieved, where drawing raises strength and the stress relief steadies the bar so it holds its shape when you cut keyways or flats. It can also be supplied hot rolled for parts that are machined in one go.
The carbon is high enough for the steel to respond to hardening and tempering, and surface hardening by induction is possible where only the surface needs to be hard. The high sulphur lowers ductility, impact strength and fatigue performance compared with an unresulphurised grade. For heavily loaded or cyclic parts, SAE 1045 or EN8 is the safer choice, and EN19 where you need deeper hardening.
Welding is not recommended. Sulphur and the medium carbon content make the weld prone to cracking. SAE 1144 parts are machined, not fabricated.

SAE 1144 Questions
Is SAE 1144 the same as 44SMn28?
No, it is close but not identical. 44SMn28 (1.0762) in EN 10087 is the nearest European equivalent and is widely supplied against SAE 1144 orders. The manganese bands differ slightly. Tell us if your drawing needs the exact SAE chemistry.
What is the difference between SAE 1144 and SAE 1045?
They have a similar carbon content. SAE 1144 has a higher manganese content and a deliberate sulphur addition, so it machines faster and breaks chips cleanly. SAE 1045 has no sulphur addition, so it is tougher and the better choice for parts that take shock or fatigue loads.
What is Stressproof or 1144 CD?
These are trade names for cold drawn, stress relieved SAE 1144 bars. The bars keep their shape better when machined unevenly. Tell us if your order is for this condition.
Can SAE 1144 be heat treated or welded?
It can be hardened and tempered or induction hardened, but it is mostly used cold drawn. We do not recommend welding because of the sulphur content and the risk of cracking.
What is SAE 1144 used for?
Shafts and spindles, hydraulic piston rods and cylinders, gears and sprockets, bolts and studs, pins, couplings and machined hex and round parts, mainly in automotive, hydraulics, fastener and machine building work.
What is the minimum order for SAE 1144 bright bars?
3 tonnes, flexible depending on size and your situation. Send us your size, condition and quantity and we confirm availability and delivery.
What is SAE 1144 equivalent to?
SAE 1144 is the same grade as AISI/SAE 1144, UNS G11440, UNI 44SMn28, UNE 44SMn28. Close equivalents are EN 44SMn28, DIN W.Nr. 1.0762.
In which forms do you supply SAE 1144?
OneKaizen supplies SAE 1144 as Bright Bars, Round Bars, Hex Bars, Square Bars, Shafts, delivered across India and exported to buyers abroad.
Do you supply SAE 1144 with a mill test certificate?
Yes. Every lot ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate showing chemistry and mechanical properties, traceable to the heat number.
